Jean Cornes
Jean, a resident in Taradale Masonic Rest Home & Continuing Care, recently celebrated her 100th year. She often reminisced with her two children Lynne and Kevin on her life growing up in Meeanee. One of six children; Jean helped on the family dairy farm and milking cows was very much part of her childhood.
Before the 1931 Hawke’s Bay earthquake, the family often rowed a boat into Napier township as the long way round was by horse and cart and in later years a car. However, when the upheaval of the 1931 quake caused the land to rise and the water to subside, boating was no longer an option.
Jean married Henry Cornes after WW11, and the family lived in Otamauri until 1961 when they moved into Taradale for the children’s schooling.
This centenarian is very much a Hawke’s Bay girl.
